The Swell is steeped in history, from the Native Americans that passed through to the early settlers and Uranium miners This hike visits a bit of that history The hike is moderate, with a fair bit of elevation gain, and a fair bit of distance That being said, it is an excellent hike, and recommended in Fall, Winter, or Spring when the temperatures are cooler Although easy access from the freeway, it doesn't seem crowded of overly traveled The combination of the early settler ruins, a historic horse trail, and ...
Did Lost and Found and MMI together Started with lost and found and did the climbers exit The 6 of us found it pretty easy but still used a hand line We left a rope at the top of the exit on one of the bolts and hiked over to MMI The "first" rap isn't really two stage as mentioned The first is pretty nasty with the crack slanted The webbing off the rock pile and small tree wasn't in great shape, but still usable The second is of a chockstone with an awkward start into the boulder field The last rap also had some me...
Completed this with a group of 4 on March 12 From leaving the car to getting back to the car, it was a little under 5 hours, though 2 members of the group were first timers, and another had little prior experience, so more experienced groups of similar size could likely be faster It was a fantastic canyon for our beginners!!It seems like it rained heavily recently, because there was a ton of water There were some extra pools that were unavoidable, though only calf deep Specifically, there was a pool at the botto...
Descended Middle Echo on Friday October 20, 2017 Like the old comments from July 2016, the usually semi-keeper was in keeper condition Have descended Echo approximately 6 times over last 14 years and not had any issues with this pothole before On this trip, a partner assist did not work well for us Pothole was a full swimmer and we didn't touch bottom while working on our escape Ultimately, after multiple attempts, we defeated pothole with a pseudo pack toss Getting anything on your toss while treading water is ver...
We started at the parking lot by the radio tower and walked down to the wash from there on the 4wd road - worked out well We opted to do the climber's exit and it was a mistake The slab is made of very weak sandstone A thin coating of eroded loose sand on the slab combined with very scarce/poor opportunities to place gear made this a rather sketchy climb Anchor building was equally challenging since the sandstone would just crumble to sand when I tested my placements Ended up having to sling some features with...
High spur is in many people's opinion the most beautiful canyon in the Robber's Roost area I would agree it is certainly high up on the list It is a photographers dream! Although technical, much of it can be enjoyed by hikers hiking down and returning the same way The technical difficulties are straightforward, making this a good canyon for canyoneers of all abilities It also, generally, doesn't hold much water, making it a good early or late season outing
Descended this on 05/19/2022, with a party of 2 in our 30s, and a car shuttle We had a pretty casual pace, taking a few snack breaks and warming breaks, and taking lots of pictures Took us about 6 hours from one car to the other Weather was mostly sunny and low 90s, but we were still pretty chilled with 3mm farmer johns After a couple of sections of swims, we were lucky to have a few square feet of direct sunlight to stand in for a few minutes before moving on Never cold enough to be worried about hypothermia as lo...
Larry Canyon is one of the Robbers Roost classics With a car shuttle and intermediate level skills, this is a fairly casual romp with a short approach and fairly short exit The goods in the canyon are second to none, with nice rappels, and deep dark narrows A section of unique "slanted slot" is one of the signature features of this canyon Larry Canyon is a recommended adventure to most canyoneers It is beginner friendly territory, with competent leadership Some of the downclimbs will require a belay or fo...
We did this as a loop up-climbing East Fork and coming down West Fork A very rewarding day Each fork on it's own is probably a bit lackluster, but together they are a 5-star day Climbing up the East Fork makes this an R rating, due to some exposure on two notable up-climbs There are 2 fairly easy up-climbs of note as well There is one where you chimney up about 10 feet and then have to get around a large chockstone When you get to the obvious big drop of about 100 feet with a large chockstone about 15 feet up and a...
I've done it a couple times I like the B-line route over the Fence Canyon and hybrid lines I bring a gallon of water and cache it after the first hill, around the Glenn Canyon sign It's helpful to know you have some extra water on the way up The Escalante River is low right now, but clear We used this as our water source, as we camped right near the Escalante It was a little sandy, but worked well and was cool and refreshing but make sure you're filtering itDon't sleep on the hike to or from Neon Canyon - it's quit...
